February 15th, 2007Is “Immortality” Possible??

Cryonics is the speculative practice of using cold to preserve the life of a person who can no longer be supported by ordinary medicine. The goal is to carry the person forward through time, for however many decades or centuries might be necessary, until the preservation process can be reversed, and the person restored to full health. 80 core chipCapable of processing 1 trillion calculations a second, Intel’s latest test chip, when used commercially, will revolutionize computing.

Computing took a leap forward when chipmakers started putting more than one core—or central brain—on a single chip. It was a way to make machines work harder even as they consumed less power. Just wait until a single chip can sport 80 cores.

The wait won’t be long. Chipmaking giant Intel (INTC) on Feb. 11 said it has successfully produced just such a chip, the size of a fingernail, capable of processing a mind-boggling 1 trillion calculations a second. The chip, which Intel claims is the fastest ever made, could start being used commercially in “in five years, if not sooner,” Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner says.

Rattner has reason to crow. The massive processing power each chip would provide will dramatically change the way consumers and businesses work and play. Financial analysis that takes days to perform in back offices could be done in seconds at a trader’s terminal on Wall Street. Real-time physics calculations could let consumers create on-the-fly games that make even the cutting-edge motion-control techniques in Nintendo’s Wii game console seem like child’s play. aqueon fireplaceThe Aqueon fireplace by Heat & Glo actually uses regular water to create fire. Ordinary tap water (preferably distilled) is supplied to the fireplace through a pipe or tank, a 220 volt electrical service then separates the hydrogen and oxygen atoms through electrolysis, the Aqueon ignites the hydrogen, and ta-dah, fire! The oxygen is then added for color and brightness, while the rest is released into the room. It doesn’t require venting because it doesn’t produce any harmful emittents like carbon monoxide — just water vapor. And the whole thing is modeled to look like an artistic sculpture of a candle flame.

craigsnumberLike the 10 Minute Disposable Emailemail service link I posted , detailing disposable email addresses you can create and dictate when they expire, Craigsnumber is a disposable telephone number service.

And it’s free..

Basically, all you do is go to Craigsnumber, click the link, and you will be instantly assigned a telephone number. This is your ‘disposable’ number.

Enter the length of time, from one hour to one month, you want this number to exist. Then enter your real telephone number in the appropriate box and all phone calls to your assigned number will be forwarded to your real number for the designated length of time.

Want to use a phone number in a newspaper ad, but don’t really want to use your real number? Create a disposable number to publish in the paper (or online), and it will expire at your chosen time.

What about all the web forms that want a telephone number, won’t complete your request without one, and you don’t want to give out your ‘true’ number? Use a Craigsnumber…

Personally, I can think of a dozen different uses for a disposable number.

Check it out…

The Mosquito is one of the worlds lightest manned Helicopters that has been designed and developed over the past 10 years to deliver performance, reliability and ease of flight. Ken Armstrong of Kit Planes Magazine said that the “Mosquito is convincing - it’s as close as you can come to real flying with almost no means of support, and the view is at least as good as a bird”. He also said that “Flying the refined Mosquito was the most fun I’ve ever had with a Helicopter!”. .

January 13th, 2007Anti-Flatulence Underwear

00037.jpgThe gas we pass may cause others to snicker, hold their noses or even flee the room.

Although we all suffer gaseous emissions from time to time, flatulence is more of a problem for some than others. Often its just a matter of controlling diet. But such conditions as irritable bowel syndrome, certain medications and lactose intolerance can result in excessive or especially foul-smelling flatulence and thus extreme social embarrassment.

Pueblo-based Under-Tec Corp. offers help with Under-Ease protective underwear for flatulence.

The company’s motto: Wear them for the ones you love.

We get a lot of jokes, acknowledges Buck Weimer, company president and inventor of Under-Ease. But we don’t have any doubt that this is a serious product that serves a purpose.

Under-Ease is somewhat similar to the more-established Flatulence Filter, which absorbs odor and can be concealed in a simple chair cushion. Since it is worn, Under-Ease offers around the clock protection.

Under-Ease is made from a soft, air-tight fabric with an exit hole cut from the back of the airtight material for gas to be expelled; a replaceable filter, which includes two layers of Australian sheep’s wool; and a layer of activated carbon, which traps foul-smelling gas. 00046.jpgToyota Motor Corp. is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday.

Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver’s bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun. The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver’s pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt, the report said.

The world’s No. 2 automaker hopes to fit cars with the system by the end of 2009, according to the report. Calls to Toyota’s headquarters in Nagoya rang unanswered on Wednesday, a public holiday.

Nissan Motor Co., another Japanese car manufacturer, has already been experimenting with breathalyzer-like devices that could detect if a driver was drunken. Similar technologies, such as alcohol ignition interlocks, are in use in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Concerns over drunken driving have surged in Japan following a series of alcohol-related accidents last year. In August, a drunken driver collided with another vehicle carrying a family of five, plunging them off a bridge and killing three children.

The incident prompted stepped-up roadside spot checks by police, who also plan to stiffen penalties for drunken driving.

00040.jpgCrime-obsessed South Africans have a powerful new weapon with which to stop likely criminals: the car flamethrower.

Casting a man-high fireball, reportedly with no damage to the paint, the Blaster has been placed on 25 South African vehicles since its introduction last month. At 3,900 rand ($655), it offers a cheap, dramatic defense against carjackers. It has yet to be deemed illegal. South African courts allow killing if convinced that it’s in self-defense. The defense is not unheard of. In last year’s 13,000 carjackings, criminals often brandished weapons or used them with little provocation.

The Blaster squirts liquefied gas from a bottle in the automobile’s trunk through two nozzles, located under the front doors. The gas is then ignited by an electric spark, with fiery consequences. Both sides flame at the same time, regardless of whether the attack is coming from just one side of the vehicle, or whether passersby are on the other side. But the breadth and depth of blast can be modified according to individual preference.

Blaster inventor Charl Fourie, 33, disputed concerns that the flamethrower could burn someone to death. “My personal feeling is that it would definitely blind a person. He will never see again,” he said Read the rest of this entry »
